I think it would be a good idea to mention when we started gaming as well.
I've played games since the NES. My favorite is the last generation. PS2/XBox/GC were host to some amazing games, in a wide variety of genres (which I think is key).
Just some of my personal favorites:
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Metal Gear Solid 2/3
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus
Metroid Prime
Resident Evil 4
I think this generation has an excellent chance of surpassing every generation before this though. PSN/XBLA/Wiiware have really opened up the doors for some more creative games like Flower, as well as retro throwbacks like Shadow Complex. We got 2D platforming back in NSMB Wii and LBP, along with indie games like Braid. Online gaming has really taken off in the console space. And I definitely think we have at least another 3 good years before this generation gives way to the next generation.
The one genre that seems to have stagnated is JRPGs, which seemed to have peaked in the SNES or PS1 generation depending on who you ask.
