to say more or less the same thing :
PS3 high price = hardcore gamer console = no need of advertising because those guys know their business and will buy the best games, best rated games, or best hyped games. A very good trailer can do the job. Same with a very good review.
PS3 low price (let's say now) = a bit more casual console = more influenced by advertising
So, like both of you said, advertising before would have been a waste of money and, mentionning money, we have to keep in mind that the advertising budget of the PS3 is typically what was "consummed" in the "sell at loss " strategy : for each PS3 sold, Sony was (is ?) losing money ...
