While Heath Ledger was incredible as the Joker, he's not solely responsible for how the character turned out, the director and the writer are a big part of it too.

No, if you read the articles on how Heath Ledger did such a fantastic job, you would know he locked himself in a hotel room for a month, rarely came out, and only concentrated on his role as the Joker.

So yeah, it really was all him, and he's 5 feet under now.
