The only thing would be more diversity. I like the way MKWii took the series, and I wouldn't mind it going that way. However, Mario Kart seems to have taken a few "let's replace this with that" rather than "let's add in this, so we have both this and this" style. That's actually rather unusual for Nintendo.
So instead of having either the current Battle Mode, or the old, making both shouldn't take that much work.
