Romney doesn't have the appeal in the GOP, nor does Pawlenty or Thune in fact most in the GOP don't know much about he latter two, Romney's big faults is he's Mormon and he's not seen as a friend of the religious right and he's considered too elite for the rural voters. He'd be good in the General, he'd still lose, but he'd do ok compared to others on the list, but he won't get the GOP nomination, he'd have to tack very far to the right, and that would only kill him in the general.
Ok, Huckabee isn't really a clown, but a brutally honest libertarian ideologue will never get past being the Republican Dennis Kucinitch.
Take the field maybe, but not have a chance of winning the GOP nomination, remember, the GOP base looks for those who are more right wing, and who appeal to the religious and neocon wings of the party, and Palin is perfect for that group.
In addition, the GOP doesn't really have a very rich stable of contenders, Romney, Pawlenty, Palin, Jindal, Huckabee, and a few others, but really its a poor list.
