Europe fears Islamification basically. They have this strange paranoia that Islam is going to take over and Sharia law is going to be introduced. This is of course not all Europeans and the sentiment is stronger in some regions than most. Also you bring up an interesting issue with the burkhas - whats this forums stance on them? They are certainly more related to fundamentalist Islam than minarets. |
That's a difficult one. I personally do not like what they represent but I could say that about a lot of religious symbols. That said, they are part of another culture and as long as people are not forced to wear them it's difficult to agrue that they shouldn't have the choice too. On the other hand there is a security issue with them. For example, motorcycle helmets are banned from banks as you can't see the persons face and so I don't see how the burka is too different. I think at passport control a women wearing a burka has to show her face but can do so in a private room with women only officers.
