Perhaps also whatever Retro's next game, whatever that'll be. Metroid Prime was a game changer.

What did it change?

It succesfully reinvented the Metroid frachise, which was unique in its own right, in full 3D. It was not a FPS, but a FP Adventure, and the first one to do it utterly right. Just read any of the reviews from when it came out, people were stunned. I remember it fondly. :)

We're talking about games that changed the industry, not reinvented themselves. Look at the OP. There was no rippling effect caused by the existence of Metroid Prime. The closest games to it are Bioshock and Condemned, and both could have and probably are as inspired by System Shock and Half-Life as they are to Metroid Prime.

The interface and hud alone were copied by multiple games after Prime 1. And I think being the first succesful First Person Adventure is worth a mention too, it's not just that it re-imagined the whole Metroid experience itself, it's that the elements it used in doing so were applied to other games as well. It's not just games like Bioshock, there are far more, such as the Star Wars Republic Commando games, and even Mirror's Edge, to a certain degree. Okay, so Metroid Prime may not have had as much influence as, say, Wii Fit, but to dismiss it altogether is just wrong.

Just look at this and tell me with a straight face it's not at the very least 'influenced' by Metroid Prime. With a screenshot of Prime 1 to the right, for comparison. :p
