The only territory the sales of the two consoles have been even remotely close together was Europe, and that has fallen off in the recent years. The PS2's staggered launch helps people with an agenda to try and show the performance to be similar. Truth of the matter is though that the PS3 has not come close to performing in the same league as the PS2, and it never will. There is more competition, less software support, and a much weaker start.
