Because all of their friends play it. It's a lot more fun to brag about game skills to friends who play the same game than to those who don't. That and the illusion that they'll be alpha male if they beat everyone of their friends in any game.
Evolutionary-wise, it makes sense. Quality-wise it's pretty much crap shoved into their faces and forced through their nostrils. It's like joining the military, nobody really wants to join but if all your friends are joining you would probably do to.
