DD allows some small developers to grow hopefully to become majors in the future. When it starts to happen we may see a price difference between DD vs retail versions. Who knows if the next consoles wars could be DD vs Box where the DD only console games are $20-$30 cheaper.
As far as Nintendo , one of the things that help PS to be a success was CD games were cheaper than N-64 cartiages.
