I think what you meant to say is if 'all' you had was a console. But despite your downplaying of KOTOR, the whole game isn't a 'dumbed down' RPG. Its still fun and a good Star Wars game. However, Its more like an RPG which tried to do new things and focus on high production values (aka LOTS of cutscenes and talking), but suffered in other areas because of this focus. Not that it matters to its sales or review scores, because, accoridng to reviewers and the general public, the best games ever are the games with good graphics and tons of dialogue/cutscenes.
But like anything, there's better games out there. Including on consoles, despite your comment.
But hitting on the whole excess dialogue and focusing on certain aspects thing, I hope they fix some of that in Old Republic. They have stated they are putting even more emphasis on 'every NPC having a unique voice and unique dialogue'. As much as I applaud their effort in the making of KOTOR, the emphasis on dialogue and cutscenes made that game kind of drag on (especially the constant debates and consoling your teammates which could only be described as a crew of depressed bipolar freaks). I really hope we aren't going to have 20 minute dialogue sequences and 'turmoil' in Old Republic. Heck, I just hope they speed up the dialogue process.
