It's an old cliche.
It actually happened on the first season when a man named Paul Potts came on the show. He was overweight, and not very attractive. And for that reason, nobody thought he could sing well.

He could sing well, very well. Who would think that a fat, unattractive guy could be a great opera singer? Shocking. It's the same cliche with Susan Boyle. Apparently, unattractive people can't be talented, but if they are, we're all supposed to be really impressed.
