^DS still sold much more than GBA, heck it'll be the highest selling system ever.
The key reason Sony won't win is the way it looks at gaming, they were willing to kill their market-share to Trojan horse Blu-ray, which shows gaming is only a means to an end for Sony, they don't really care about gaming, outside of using it as a platform for other tech, Nintendo on the other hand views gaming as a means in and of itself, this is key, its why Nintendo can disrupt and Sony cannot
