Sony could easily cripple Microsoft's next system by simply not letting them put a bluray player into it. Bluray is sure to become bigger and bigger and will be a much larger factor in next gen consoles. On the flipside they could let them put it in the console and cash in on it. Either way people who say PS3 has made so many mistakes and it was overpriced and all of this garbage are simply not aware of all the facts.

Still, they kind of crippled themselves for half of this gen by focusing their system on Blu-ray.  Sure, it might have helped them win the 'format wars'.  But strictly speaking towards marketshare towards consoles and gaming as a whole, it was a LARGE part of what put them in the place they are now.

PS2 came out at the perfect time, when everyone wanted to buy DVDs and PS2 just supplied an added way of playing them (for a reletively normal priced console).

PS3 on the other hand was WAY too early and trying to force Blu-ray into the market when like 5% of people were even interested in switching.  With a $600 console.  Sony didn't even look at their prior success (with DVDs and PS2) and try to immitate it.  They just went 'bigger and better'!
