The cell is really only really a modified PowerPC chip with 8 cores. The fact that cell development has been discontinued does not mean Sony will have to move to a whole different architecture if and when they produce a PS4. They could use the latest PowerPC derivative (as long as IBM keep the power consumption and heat and cost under control). Which is pretty much the same basic architecture as in the XBOX360 and Wii.

The real difference in the cell was the way it used the multi cores as far as I can see - which has been improved upon in more modern processors anyway.

The much publicised difficulty in programming for optimal use of the cell is actually the industry-wide difficulty in optimising use of multi core processor chips in general - balancing the workload between all cores and not having one core doing all the computational tasks while other cores are unused.
