Sometimes you need to release a game, let it settle in and allow a few million people tell you what they liked and didn't like so you can adjust for the next title. It's just not always possible to get everything right on the first try. Delaying Left 4 Dead a year wouldn't have necessarily given them the time to add some of the added content of L4D2, because the ideas may have come from user feedback.
