A Microsoft handheld would probubly do as good as the GameGear did against Nintendo. Sony's success has been largely driven by piracy and the PS brand. Microsoft could never dethrone Nintendo and like heck it even is a contender to take out PSP2. A Microsoft handheld would just be more money being washed down the drain.
Microsoft's best option would be to bulster its support of Nintendo's systems. On the DS we saw numerous Microsoft properties appear on portable platforms. If Microsoft boosted this support I think they could ship alot of software and probubly hurt Sony in the proccess which in the end is the only reason they would have to enter the handheld industry anyways
