Honestly the hate is equal parts envy, frustration, fear, and self recrimination. When a zealot takes notice of a real good highly anticipated game going to a console not their own it hits a raw nerve. This is the old sour grapes fable expressed in real life. Instead of telling themselves that the game looks entertaining. Their frustrations get the better of them, and often they hate on the game to make themselves feel better about the fact that they will not be playing it.
Hype is a subjective thing. When it is over something your not interested in you feel its excessive. However when it is something your interested in the hype machine only stimulates you further enhancing the experience. However hype is not something you should hold against a game.
Both Halo 3 and Mass Effect appear to be truly wonderful games. I have gotten my moneys worth out of Halo 3. I have probably spent over eighty hours playing the game, and I know I will continue to play it for months or years. I also think that Mass Effect is the heir apparent to the first Knights of the Old Republic. Another series of games I truly love. The story is the experience, and your not a passive observer.
I suppose it is a shame that fanboys are so blind. They only hurt themselves. They are not open to new experiences, and thats the spice of life.
