As long as we're in RPG-land, leo-j also forgot to mention Crimson Gem Saga, the Star Ocean remakes, and all the PSOne classic RPGs that hit the PSP this year, like Suikoden, Wild Arms 2, Final Fantasy VII, etc. I have played them.. and no, they aren't in my profile, because updating my profile with all the games I own would take freaking days, and I have WAY better things to do (I tried the profile updating once... so I know how arduous it is :) ). This is a silly discussion, but as an adult portable gamer (I don't own a DS, but I play with one all the time... I'm not going to explain why, so don't ask), the PSP destroyed the DS this year, but only if you qualify that statement with "with regards to RPGs". I think you have to qualify the comparison with "in terms of game variety", or "sheer number of games", or "number of mario games", or "games for young folks or old folks" before you can claim the DS' lineup this year was "better". The PSP had some amazing games this year... it was stellar. Still, the DS is undeniably a beast. Its tough to "beat" another console in every aspect, which is exactly why both the PSP and DS have a market, and will continue to do so. |
Right. So a single genre, that a lot of people don't enjoy, is what the PSP destroyed the DS in this year. That doesn't mean the PSP had a better year, because variety is important. It may have met or exceeded the expectations of a few people with narrow tastes, but for those of us that game past a single genre like RPGs, you are basically conceding the defeat of the PSP, yes?
Now that we're finished with that, I'm not even sure if the PSP beat the DS in the one category you claim it does. Most of your examples are of games from year's past. I suppose if you're an RPG gamer that also happened to miss the 5th generation, PSP suits your needs. In that case though, you might as well just make the case that the PSP is stellar at running PS1 emulators and leave it at that.
Regarding original content, this is the PSP's argument:
Dissidia, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Half-Minute Hero, Class of Heroes, Mana Khemia: Student Alliance, Crimson Gem Saga, Phantasy Star Portable, Adventures to Go
Here's the DS's argument:
A Witch's Tale, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, FF Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, Avalon Code, Nostalgia, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorer's of the Sky, Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, Dragon Quest Wars, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga, Black Sigil, Mega Man Star Force 3, SMT: Devil Survivor, Dokapon Journey, Suikoden Tierkreis, Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, My World My Way, Master of the Monster Lair, Bleach the 3rd Phantom, Hero's Saga Laevatein Tactics, Blue Dragon Plus
I think the DS makes a strong enough argument for RPGs also. You may prefer the PSP's offerings more, but that doesn't mean the DS hasn't put forth a sufficient effort. I could easily see any RPG gamer enjoying the DS's offerings more.
Personally, the only two genres I think the PSP has ever had and will ever have over the DS are racing and sports games. That's it. It's is consistently better in both categories every year without fail.
