Someone who commits violence in the name of some religion isn't speaking for that religion, but also the 'moderate' people can't claim that real Islam doesn't justify it. There are plenty of passages in the Koran (and Bible, and other holy books/teachings) that support violence, as well as those that support peace. One man's interpretation to mean one thing is as equally valid as the others who don't, because religion means you don't have to believe or act rationally.
It wasn't most Muslims' fault, but neither was it the action of one man. The culture that encourages people to believe things without justification is the problem. Religion should be like smoking - allowed, but socially excluded and as difficult as possible for the unconverted to pick up.
