Mostly going to depend on the game and servers your connecting to.
With the DSL at my old apartment, it was a poor experience with playing games via PSN as well as some PC games. When it came to Valve games like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2 however, I had a better connection to some servers with a lower speed DSL versus the 7mb cable we eventually started getting later on.
