In your first point you are correct. FF has pretty much only stuck to tradition by hitting on little bits of 'fanservice'. Inserting things like Mog and Choboco summons, past songs or characters with similar names.
However, the reason Dragon Quest never got popular outside of Japan was not because it 'stuck to tradition'. It was because it was horribly handled by its parent companies and never marketed well. Whereas Final Fantasy was pushed hard with good marketing and always kept 'current' from the start. That's why Final Fantasy has always stayed popular, while Dragon Quest never caught on. Hell, its pretty sad how Dragon Quest has never been able to gain attention when fricken DRAGON BALL and ANIME became a mega hit in America. You'd think they'd put 2 and 2 together. Instead, they keep trying to market Dragon Quest as some deformed British stepson of Final Fantasy that has only a fleeting connection to Akira Toriyama.
