I'd actually rather see the series go back to more a traditional style seen during previous console generations (snes, ps1) rather then change even more then it has over the past few years. I do agree that some of the japanese influence (specifically with the character design) has gotten out of hand though.

Everytime FF (after FF7) went back to "tradition" (that is a medieval setting) it underperformed

FF9, FF12 both underperformed in comparison to FF7, FF8 & FF10

Don't expect a FF that goes back to medieval setting for a long time, unless the FF tactics team is making FF15 like they made FF12

I didn't so much mean in terms of setting (I mean, medieval settings have been absent from the game for a long time, FF6 was steampunk, FF7 cyberpunk, FF8 modern/futuristic, etc), what I meant was more in regards of the gameplay. Since FFIX many changes have been made from the traditional core Final Fantasy experience, notibly things like your world map (obviously I understand progression, but the direction FF took was to linear, DQ8 did it right), the combat (FFXI and FFXII have very much departed from the traditional FF combat), etc.
