EA strayed away from it because they had no choice. The franchises they were milking were dying.
What do you think will happen with Activision once Guitar Hero (slowly fading) and Call of Duty (at its peak, give it time) decline? Once the well is dry, one must move elsewhere. If they cannot come up with another hit soon (and instead spend all their time whoring GH and CoD), their fall is inevitable.
