Honestly, since the wii is backwards compatible, and since the gameplay is similar, I would recommend you getting PoR if you can find it cheap used somewhere. Its definitely not required because the story is fine standalone but it definitely gives you a lot more appreciation and attachment to the characters and helps a bit on the background.
I have a tendency to field a lot of my PoR characters over the RD ones because of that. There is a bit of a bonus in that you can get some extra stat boosts if the PoR save file has characters that maxed out but it definitely isn't that big of a deal.
