Firstly - citation very much needed - that link you provided us is an attention seeking blogger, quite possibly yourself

1 million accounts =/= 1 million consoles

MS make a loss on the console in order to make a profit on accesories and games. A pirate who is buying a new 360 due to this event will not rebuy accesories, nor do they ever buy any games. Where does MS profit from this? (Besides the obvious motive of deterring people from buying a console and pirating on it)

btw the last time i checked i saw microsoft selling hardware at a profit like the xbox 360 and xbox 360 elite. :P

Was that before or after the recent $100 price cut on the elite??

I am fairly confident that MS make a loss on each console, and if they do make a profit, it is inconsequential when compared to software sales.

MS's goals in this are

Stop these particular pirates - some will now play more pirated games on another console, some will  rebuy a 360 and continue to pirate (this doesn't help MS though) and some will rebuy a 360 and genuinely buy games for it.

Deter other people from becoming pirates, giving people the same three options as above.

The goal of this is to sell software, not hardware
