You could normally be right, and it makes sense that if someone doesn't want to do something he'll deny if asked.
But when someone doesn't lose any opportunity to deny something, even when nobody asked him about it, what you should think. It's like a habitual offender saying "It wasn't me" even before the police started asking about a crime: if he denies in general, there are chances he's innocent, but if he denies a specific crime even before the police mentions it, the chances he's guilty are very high.
