The large majority of the PC audience should care, because what Modern Warfare 2 is doing will change PC gaming as we know it, and not necessarily in a good way. PC users must boycott the game if they want to prevent any undesirable changes to gaming on their platform.
First and foremost, the $60 pricetag. $60 for a PC game is unacceptable when there are absolutely no royalties to be paid to console manufacturers. It is total bullshit and I for one will never support a $60 PC game. I paid enough money building my rig, and $50 games are one of the reasons I use to justify having a PC over a 360. Every multiplatform title I buy on PC over console is $10 saved.
Second is the lack of dedicated servers. The mere notion that it'll help the community is simply preposterous. The console online community is horrible, you're constantly getting matched with annoying people that talk crap, swear profusely, poorly adjust their mic settings, or whatever else. With dedicated servers, admins cut the fat out. Additionally, you don't play with random people every game, by sticking to a few servers, you get to know more people.
Finally, there's the preset number of players in a match, as well as the lack of modding that further ruins the game for a lot of people. Although it doesn't matter to me, it still strips the power from the player.
Not having dedicated servers is only good for two things, matchmaking and piracy. If all you want to do is see your e-penis grow as you play Modern Warfare 2 online, then it's great for you. However, if you want to play in tight-knit communities where just about everyone talks and enjoys the social aspect of multiplayer, then MW2 is a slap to the face.
(single-player is another story altogether, and although I'd buy the game for the single-player alone, the $60 tag assures that I will be pirating MW2, and the only PC games I've ever pirated are old PC games).
