yeah it's only free because they have to repair it for free, if m$ could get away with it they would not do it for free.
Anyway you should be safe with the slim, hopefully, just understand that no electrical device has a 0% failure rate, and things can and do go wrong, allthough i must admit my original phat ps2 is still going strong (must have got lucky as the DRE was a killer)
