Yes, it's a texture swapping technique which makes it easier for the GPU to process instead of modelling the car in conformity of the damage per se.

Yeah, some more videos showing the damage and more confirmation from PD part will be good, and we can't even begin to consider it the best until we have word on the mechanical damage and it's overall effect on the conduction of the car per se, but until then, that's one hell of a good scratch xD
