I am going to try to factor in the Pros and Cons of all sides here.

Dedicated Servers:

* Enable the community to tweak and mod, and play their creations

* Enable pirates to play their games, without getting caught

* Enable playing games without getting hit with ads.

 

Non-Dedicated:
* Better control over the game environment, to make sure it doesn't get out of wack, and people cheat

* Crack down on piracy, forcing only legal copy of the games to be played.

* Generate ad revenues and other streams of income, by forcing all traffic to a common community point.  This also helps players find new players.

Also dedicated servers can (and mostly do) stay on 24x7, which makes it much easier to build an online community of players who know each other and play together often.
