It's basic economics.
If you provide dedicated servers you have to provide officials dedicated servers ( or at the start people will bitch there are no servers up).
With over 50% of the people playing those games online using pirated version of the software no PC developer in their right mind wants to have to pay for dedicated officials servers to support pirates ( remember when the last Stardock game released ? The servers went down the first week and the numbers they provided was something like 80% of the people on them were pirates which is the reason the servers crashed, they did not account for those when they designed the servers..)
Bottomline is with the rampant PC piracy developers are not going to do anything that would increase their costs as more pirates play the game..
It's one thing to loose sales due to piracy, it's another to actually incur extra costs due to pirates playing online..
