Well off by what standard? If you mean the state is in debt I don't deny that but so is the federal government.

I doubt you could make a strong argument that people are better off in California ...

Can you tell me in what way are they worse off? I'm guessing you live in Texas?

Pro-tip: adjust income for cost of living

Fair enough, but California is 10th for average life expectancy among US states, while Texas is 30th. The average Californian lives 1.5 years longer than the average Texan, surely life can't be that bad if people there live longer than in Texas.
