Yes, you could control your torso - but you could actually aim your camera independently of the direction your torso was facing too (that's what the nub on the left joystick is for, if I remember). You could control the direction your weapons were pointing, the facing of your mech's torso, and the facing of your mech's camera - all independently of each other. If you got turned around and tried to move while turning too fast you'd fall over.
