I (personally) never implied that everyone who used drugs or alcohol have their lives ruined, but very few people who are moderate to heavy drug users (or drinkers) in their teens and early twenties are successful in the long run unless they straighten-up; and with the support that people are given in this age group to achieve their goals and dreams, it is much easier to get what you want out of life if you don't screw up (too badly) when you're this age.
