In Apple's defense they do try to insert a little bit about Mac's advantages in the commercial spots, but it's just so overwhelmingly overshadowed by their attacks against PCs that they are easily forgettable.

Anyhow, in the case of both the Sony and the Apple ads, you do remember the main characters in them, and the ads do what they set out to do. Apple vs Mac is memorable though. The difference here is that I believe the Sony ads are more friendly, and enjoyable, even if you aren't a fan of the PS3, you still can get a kick out of the ads and enjoy them. With Sony, they don't need to be on the attack like Apple does. They need to make people feel good about the products, and get familar with the benefits. Kevin Butler spots, as I see it, are having a similar effect that Jack Trenton does at E3. You don't feel that Sony is arrogant when you see both these, and that is what Sony needs.
I will say the Kevin Butler spots will go down now as the top 5 best ad campaign series ever for a videogame related product.

Pretty big claim there O.o I haven't seen enough video game ads so I can't disagree or agree.
I do think you're spot on with your comparison of Mac vs PC ads and Sony ads.
Although there's still a lot of people just laughing and still riding on the 'Macs and Starbucks are cool' wave with the Windows 7 ads =/

I go back to Atari 2600 days and remember the old George Plimpton vs Atari ads. I have seen a lot of them. I will at least argue the series is in the top 10.
