Well it is not easy to make a kart game without being called a copy of mario kart. In my opinion the original one is still the best (with MK DS close second) during the generations nintendo struggled to make Mario kart better Double Dash, including Bikes in MK Wii but those were not features that made mario kart better.
In fact I think Rare with Diddy Kong Racing and Naughty Dog(Universal) with CTR are still the best contenders kartgmes who ever come close in quality with Mario kart.
