The way it followed the sentence: "I also wonder how many husbands and boyfriends will be admitted to hospitals because of women that forgot to remove the contraptions." makes me think that the author was referring to the husbands/boyfriends to check, just in case their wife/girlfriend left it in by accident. That's just how I interpreted it.
