Hmm... well, as long as they know what whent wrong, then there is something to work with. But I agree, the software has been lacking, though Nintendo is not the only ones to blame. A greater effort from 3rd parties could have made the problem smaller. The rest as they say, is history

I don't think Nintendo are completely blameless. By the sound of things they need to communicate better with 3rd parties to help them understand the Wii. It's been 3 yrs and 3rd parties are mostly failing to bring out anything inspiring to the console. Its like they need someone to give them a push in the right direction and say, "Hey, look, you can do this and you can be sucessful!". Nintendo can only do so much with 1st party material. Most people are confident that the next Zelda is going to be something special but they need games to fill in the gap and its not happening with only 1st-party games.

I do find it odd though that they say they've failed... high standards.

From all the reports prior to the release of the Wii, Nintendo really worked to try to bring third-parties to the table, much more than it ever had before.

Taking that into account, as well as the lower development costs and higher sales rates, it should be surprising that more shovelware ended up on the Wii than ever before on a Nintendo console.  That is a sign of success.

But a sign of not success was that the bigger budget titles were often not ported (or have been ported in reduced or late versions).  By and large, the same qualities that made it a sales success with the masses -- the motion, the accessibility, the general-level display not needing HD -- made it much less advantageous for third parites to bring over high level games. Reprogramming and selling to non-traditional customers just were not worth it for these companies, particulary those that could continue to earn high profits selling to their traditional customers who had the other consoles. Instead, they developed less-than-stellar gaming experiences for the Wii, resulting in a perception that the system is only for poor quality games.
