Maybe console sales, console sales will probably be high. I do not think they are going to get the response they hoped for from the PC community. If they sell a bunch on console so what, we already all knew console sales for many console FPS are higher than sales for PC FPS when they are multi-platform AAA titles. CoD being probably the biggest hit with console gamers, aside from Halo. Some PC FPS franchises, notably Valves still sell millions on PC but arent nearly as hot on console.
IW thought they would be able to garner Valve-type sales on the PC by using Steam and consolifying MW2 even more than MW1, and reach "Valvehood" on the PC. They determined their existing fanbase was a detriment to sales.
They are about to face the reality of the market, and the PC gamer market is not going to reward their behavior. Fans of console style FPS mechanics... mostly already have or would buy a 250$ xbox, people dont typically spend 1k$ on a PC for the purpose of playing console games on the PC. |
It's all about the situation the game is released. Almost multiplatform FPS games whose PC version is not consolized nor delayed, and doesn't have a sequel coming within the next 2 years, will sell better on PC than on any console.
The thing is that the way FPS franchises are handled on consoles is detrimental to the sales of the PC versions. Usually, Most sales of PC games come AFTER the it's been released for a year. But the publishers don't play at PC's sales strength, and instead they release sequels just a year after, cutting off alot of the sales of PC versions, in order to sell it to the consoles (where most of their sales are made in the first month of release).

You do realize that those sales that come 1 year after the release usually come at a much lower price point and do not generate that much profit right ?
PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !
PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
