I think just like there's a good and bad Cole, there's a good and bad Kessler too.
If you play as bad Cole, Bad Kessler comes back to train cole, and if you play as good, "good" Kessler is the one you fight at the end of the first game.
I think the adversary in the next game will be the Kessler that doesn't come back to prep Cole. somehow this Other Kessler can cross not only time but alternate realities too, thus casing the chaos.- creating potentially dangerous and destructive reality paradoxes
So the next game, if you play as good, you'll face the Bad Kessler and visa versa.
Then again i'ts been a while since I've played it and I've probably forgotten quite a few things from the story, seiing as how it didn't make much sense to me at the time lol
