And why is all logic gone from the ending?

Spoilers:

Assuming Kessler/Future whats-his-face can control his time travel power why not just go back and kill this 'evil figure' when it first showed its face?  That is what he said he should have done but instead ran and then when he wanted to stop it it was too late.  Even if he wasn't strong enough when it first showed up why not go kill the figure when it was younger and weak instead?

Assuming he cannot control his time travel and just ended as far back as he did...why put his younger self through all that?  He probably still had the option to kill the young evil, or hell even just tell present day Cole (I remembered his name) what was going to happen and train him since he doesn't seem to give a monkeys about the timeline.  Or even better the two of them work together to kill the evil figure?

Point being, there are probably a good dozen or more much more logical and more likely to suceed methods of stopping this evil than the method he chose of taking over some cult and booting out the leader, destroying a city and killing so many people, not to mention needlessly killing the love of his life.

The guy is retarded.

I think there is much more to this "evil" than you think there is. Maybe it comes from somewhere else, and he couldn't just walk up to it and kill it when it was weak like he thought he could. Maybe the only way to counter it was to mold Cole the wayhe did. If Kessler had just straight up told Cole that some evil would come in several years, and that they would need to kill it... then what? how would they do it? Maybe the only way to counter this evil is to turn Cole into the hero/infamous guy that he comes at the end of the game.
