Nintendo will heavily advertise the Wii HD in order for it to replace the Wii.
Also keep in mind Nintendo is in a good position to maintain and expand it's market share. Also this is talking about releasing a new Wii in 2 years. The market in 2 years could be drastically different.
Wii sales will eventually drop, and in two years the amount of homes with HD tvs will be a lot larger. The homes with new HD tvs, who already have a Wii or are casually interested in gaming, will likely want to move to HD consoles. Having an HD upgrade available for the Wii is better for Nintendo than having no option.
On a side note: Wii HD may also not even have any physical media. Carmack predicted that the next Wii will be digital distribution only.
