A lot of fans of the original weren't terribly pleased by the revisions made to the sequel. Resistance 3 could feasibly go either way.
While the multiplayer modes pushed the boundaries into new territory for the franchise, personally, I felt too many changes were made to the core single player experience in an attempt to make it more like Modern Warfare (no health pick ups, no weapon wheel, etc.).
Plus the loss of the retrospective narrative by Parker changed the way the plot was revealed in the sequel; less effectively IMO.
No Nathan Hale in R3 will make it harder to solidify a connection between sequels, but I'm sure their writers have it all worked out.
