Main reason is the internet, no where to argue back in the day of nes or snes.
But I don't find it odd or weird, I am surprised people find it odd. People are crazy about sport teams and bad mouth other teams all the time, they go ballistic over a touchdown or home run. This is not much different with this console battle, people choose which console they like best and want that console to beat all.
Both can be seen as stupid, in the end of the day, how does my team winning effect me really? How does Nintendo being first in the console wars effect me? Maybe just rub it on my friends faces or the other side fans faces. And for the hate, you know how many people hate the Yankees (or love them)? People will fight and riot for their team, so I don't find it weird that there is so much arguments with the consoles.
