This is a significantly small market Malstrom is talking about, and he's making it seem this is the biggest market Nintendo should go for. Nintendo does not need to have every old successful game have some sort of revitalized effort to pick up older gamers. Sony did not utilize this strategy when they pulled the rug out from under Nintendo. This article also doesn't explain the drop from the NES to the SNES since the SNES had the exact same games as the NES, just more of them and better versions in many cases, perfectly employing Malstrom's suggested strategy and dropping in sales anyways.

Console success is far too complicated to be shoved into this nice, neat package. I would say Nintendo's failure had far more to do with bad management decisions regarding third party relations, better marketing campaigns from competitors and a horrible decision to stick with carts than it ever did because they made Mario and Zelda 3D.
