I can understand all the games he chose and why he chose them but I would add Elder Scrolls: Arena as it was the first open world game (1994) and was the first game to have a Day-Night cycle. Also, surely Wolfenstein 3D should be up there as it invented the FPS genre.

Elder Scrolls is the first thing that poped in my head when he was talking about open world gaming.

While Wolf3D invented FPS, I think Quake is more influential. This was many peoples first experience with online FPS's. When QuakeWorld added TCP/IP support those stuck with dial-up could actually achieve playable pings! Oh sure it wasn't as good as those LPB's with cable/DSL but still decent   That made it accessible to more and more people and it just snowballed from there - to where we are today.

You might have a point with Quake, I remember playing it with my mates after school. Good times. It was also the first FPS to include fully 3D character models I believe.

Oh yeah! Plus GLquake added graphics upgrades to those of us lucky enough to have *gasp* graphics cards in our PC's.

Heh.

Also, the developers were nice enough to release the tools to create our own levels. Anyone else remember when Id was god?
