Not to mention that DVD too took ages to become affordable and mainstram, <100€ PC burners and <150€ living room players (not even recorders, the only affordable replacement for old VCR's initially had a DVD player, but VHS for recording) started appering in 2004. With cheap drives, also cheaper DVD editions increased, making them affordable for whoever didn't want only the latest movies.

yea and even then many people Still used VHS until IT WAS stopped being produced

On DEC 31, 2008 , the last major United States supplier of pre-recorded VHS tapes, Distribution Video Audio Inc. of Palm Harbor, Florida, shipped its final truckload.

VHS was around in the 70's

Then VCD started in the early 90's

than DVD took over but even Now DVD has the largest market share of home movie market

Blu-Ray will gain that share because all Blu-Ray player's still play DVD's!

it's not going away, not for a long time. just Like DVD will not due to many consumer's still love DVD.
