They wont go unnoticed in the industry, but the industry is not consumers, consumers won't care unless it can give an experience that trumps the Wii, so far there is no evidence of that Wii is missing a lot of games that don't really cater to the mass market, most consumers don't care about uncharted or FF13, or even Halo, and if it were true that people weren't buying Wii games, then why does Wii push far more software and have comparable attach rates? Nintendo would lose a lot of profit trying to chase after those games, for little benefit, in terms of sales and software profits, plus it would alienate a lot of Wii owners who wouldn't want to update so soon. |
The people who will care about these new controllers and will make these successful (or not) will be the actual PS360 owners, people who didn't want to touch a "casual" or "outdated" console like Wii, and didn't believe in motion controls so far... but now that it's available for their favourite machine, they will just go crazy about it...
And don't forget that PS360 have still some "userbase growth" left: the elitist price has kept many people away from PS3 (not so true for 360), but if now, some newcomers have to make a choice, the PS360 and Wii will be in direct competition, more so than ever before... if the motion controls in PS360 are good (and they should be, Sony and Microsoft are not that stupid), with the prices now closer, and with all the other features PS360 already have, Wii may loose its momentum quite easily...
Now, the mass market don't care for most of these "hardcore" games, that may be true... but don't forget that it's always the "avid gamers" who are the most important customers: the attach rate for the Gamecube was higher than the ones of PS2 and Xbox, nearly 10 games sold for each Gamecube... not because of the huge and very diverse library, we all know that, but because the "core" Nintendo fanbase buys A LOT of games (and more often, a lot of 1st party games, first and foremost): something many people do forget...
But that "core" userbase hasn't changed much: we're still only 10-15 millions, while the rest of the Wii's userbase are kids, families, casuals, newcomers, fitness girls, soccer moms, etc, etc... i have nothing against these people, i find it great that everyone may find games for their own tastes, and that everyone may be happy with a Wii: but the good Wii attach rate do exist because of people like US, people who buy 10/20 games a year, if not more... the average attach rate is higher thanks to the people you meet here, or everywhere on the net... while the "mass market" buys (massively) only a couple or a handful of titles each year, like Wii Fit or Mario Kart...
And to attract the "real", "core", "avid" gamers, and have an EVEN BETTER attach rate, Nintendo needs to have most of the best games released each year ALSO on Wii, in EVERY genre... it's the only way to have decent sales for 3rd parties, otherwise, the 1st party will be the only BIG hits, while 3rd parties will have some moderate "niche" success, and maybe some hits, but with sports and music games only...
If you want a Wii put in a large but very limited "sports and music" niche, while all the action/adventures, RPGs, FPS go to the competition, good for you, but that's not what i want... and btw, you're slightly hypocritical, or you contradict yourself: in another thread, i've just readed you wrote "We want quality games to come to Wii"... and now, you're telling me that because Wii is supposed to be a "mass market" console, the Wii owners don't care for all the other quality games out there? Just as if we all want to play the same games, or we may all be happy with the poor efforts actually made for that brand new "mass market"... with a few exceptions, of course: but not everyone has the talent of the Nintendo teams, even for "casual" games like Wii Fit or Wii Sports Resort... and i don't even mention Zelda or Metroid or Mario, of course...
