There is a problem with the net having drastically different numbers all over for BluRay. All hardware reports dont include 360 as a dvd player but do include PS3 as a bluray player.

Some BluRay disc sales include blank recordable discs others dont. The DEG for this year is just BluRay Movie sales. So these figures in the OP are correct for movie sales across the 3 mediums.

There is another site called BluRay stats which only base it's figures off of top 20. Where BluRay is currently 8%. But agian doen't include the whole range.

Blu-Ray will not be gone with the IDEA that digital download's will be taking over.

the simple truth to the matter.

the IDEA that the majority of the people would throw away their physical collection of DVD's and go all digital is not going to ever happen in any near future. why because most people who buy movies have bought so many and the collection is so large that it would be deemed a waste of money. Thus many people are set in their way's of DVD.

Music is not the same as Movies when it come's to Digital Downloads. watching movies on the go is nice but for a majority of the people it's not even realistic, that's is also one of the reason's why UMD did not do as well. many people do not see the any real advantage of that because to be blunt there's more important things to do than watch a movie on the go.

if you want to talk about digital download player's for Car's?

physical media is trusted because there is less problem's, for many people

one only has to look at what happened recently with T-moble and Microsoft server's for the sidekick to see Many People do not trust Digital Downloads.

the fact that all Blu-Ray player's and optical drive's still play DVD's mean's that Blu-Ray is not going to fade into the night, Blu-ray is not

has 13 of the largest CE optical drive companies that produce the drive's which is pretty much the entire industry, they have been backing the Blu-Ray format since 2002, in its development and evolution. the consumer has weight when it come's to purchase that is true. but also the other truth is the consumer can only buy what's put out on the market also. so if the large companies all decided on a format For HD

then its not going away as long as they keep support, and have you seen any of these large companies that have dropped support for

but ask how many have put greater investment into digital download's , which they have not.

it's very simple in order for Blu-Ray to go away DVD would have to stop selling, and the Majority of people would have to drop DVD and go with DIGITAL DOWNLOAD'S

its most likely never going to happen because many people collect thing's and collector's view digital downloads as valueless

Your right, most people will refuse to give up on the dvd's that they already own.  I love DD but I have a large collection of dvd movies that I will never give up on.  That doesn't mean that DD will not compliment those.

I don't think people are going to completely give up on dvd's or some form of physical storage for movies (for a very long time).  But what I see happening is that digital downloads are going to make it much easier for a person to watch what they want to watch WHEN they want to watch it.  Gradually after these people get accustomed to this change they will eventually not feel the need to go out and make physical purchases.  Of course it will take a long time.   Not to mention people will still have the need to give physical media as gifts for Christmas and the like.
